The world's first Riesling winery, a symbol of the Rheingau
The vineyard of "Schloss Johannisberg" (Castle of St. John's Mountain) still maintains the strict boundaries established centuries ago as a single vineyard, with the 50th parallel running through its centre (it is one of five special single vineyards that, according to German wine law, are allowed to be labelled by their vineyard name alone).
There is a record of Emperor Ludwig I owning a vineyard in 817, and it has been known as one of Germany's leading wine-producing regions for over 1,200 years. In 1100, a monastery was built here by Benedictine monks. In 1720, most of the domaine was planted with Riesling vines, and in 1775, the late grape harvesting method was discovered at Schloss Johanniberg. In 1816, the Austrian Emperor gifted this estate to Prince Metternich, who served as chairman of the Congress of Vienna, which brought peace to Europe after Napoleon's rule and was responsible for arranging the European relationship at the Congress of Vienna.
Although part of the estate was destroyed during World War II in 1942, it was recognised as a single vineyard under the Wine Law in 1971, and has since gained fame as a Riesling vineyard and one of the longest-standing domaines in the world.
The cellar master at Schloss Johanniberg also produces high-quality sparkling wines ( Fürst von Mettenich ), including Rieslings.
