The world's first Riesling winery symbolizes Rheingau
The vineyards of Schloss-Johnnisberg (Castle of Mount John) continue to maintain today the strict section of a single vineyard, which was established centuries ago, with the 50°N latitude passing through its centuries. (It is one of five special single vineyards that is permitted only the name of the vineyard on the label by the German wine law).
It is known as one of Germany's most famous wine regions, with a record of Emperor Ludwig I owning a vineyard in 817. In 1100, a monastery was built here by Benedictine monks. Riesling trees were planted in most of the domaine in 1720, and in 1775 a late picking method of grapes was discovered in Schloss-Johnniberg. In 1816, the estate was presented to Prince Metternich, who chaired the Vienna Conference, who brought peace to post-Napoleonic Europe and was responsible for the arrangements about Europe at the Vienna Conference.
Although some parts were destroyed by World War II in 1942, it was certified as a single vineyard by the Wine Act in 1971, and became famous as one of the longest-old domaines in the world as Riesling vineyards.
High-quality sparkling wines including Riesling are available by Schloss Johanniberg's cellar master (Fürst von Mettenich) is also made.
